The other essentials required for the prayer include grains that are placed in a plate and positioned in the center of the picture. The food offerings include puris, halwa, boiled channa and jowar, etc. Of late, people have been offering sweets that their children like to eat. Money offerings are also placed before the Mata’s picture. Once the reading of the story is done, the sweets and money are distributed among children and elders of the family. Some families also have the tradition of making a garland with silver coins or keepsakes. They keep adding to this garland when a child is born in the family or a son gets married. Every year the Ahoi Mata picture is adorned with this garland and this tradition is passed on to future generations.

प्राचीनकाल में एक नगर में एक साहूकार रहता था. उसके सात लड़के थे. दीपावली से पहले साहूकार की स्त्री घर की लिपा-पोती के लिए मिट्टी लेने की खदान में गये और खदान में कुदाल से जब मिट्टी खोदने लगे तो देवयोग से उसही जगह एक सेह की मांद थी. सहसा उस स्त्री की कुदाल सेह के बच्चो को लग गयी और बच्चे मर गये.यह देख उस स्त्री को बहुत दुःख हुआ, पर अब होनी को कौन ताल सकता है.वेह स्त्री दुखी होते हुए अपने घर आ गये.
परन्तु कुछ दिन बाद उस स्त्री का लड़का मर गया.फिर दूसरा और तीसरा अर्थात एक वर्ष में उस साहूकार के सातो लड़के मर गये.इसपर वेह स्त्री बहुत दुखी रहने लगे.एक दिन रोते-रोते उसने पदूस की ओरतो से कहा मैंने जानबुज़ के तो कोई पाप नही किया, हा पर एक बार मिट्टी खोदने खदान में गये थे तो कुदाल सेह के बच्चो को लगे और वो मर गये.और तबसे एक वर्ष में मेरे पुत्र मर गये. यह बात सुन ओरतो ने कहा की तुमने जो ये बात बताए हमें इससे तुम्हारे आधा पाप उतर गया.और तुम अष्टमी के दिन सेह और सेह के बच्चो के चित्र बनाकर उसके पूजा करो और शमा याचना करो. इश्वर की कृपा से तुम्हारा पाप उतर जाएगा और तुम्हे पुत्र प्राप्त होंगे. यह सुन उस साहूकार की स्त्री ने अष्टमी के दिन वर्त रखा और प्रभु की कृपा से उसे पुत्र प्राप्त हुए. तभी से कार्तिक मॉस के कृष्ण पक्ष की अशतामी को वर्त व पूजन किया जाता है और ये वर्त अहोई अष्टमी के नाम से जाना जाता है.
( Once upon a time, there lived a woman in a village. She had seven sons. One day she went to the forest to bring soil for the renovation and painting of her home (this was in the month of kartik just before the Hindu festival Deepawali). She started digging soil with axe nearby a den. Suddenly the woman’s axe fell on the cub in the den and the cub died. The woman felt very sorry and sympathetic. She took soil from the forest and came back.
Few days later, all her seven sons died within a year. She was very sad. One day she narrated her woes to old ladies in her village, she was crying and told them that she didn’t commit the sin and it happened unintentionally. She narrated to the ladies that once when she was digging for the soil in the forest her axe fell on the cub and thereafter within a year all my seven sons died. The ladies appreciated for confessing her guilt and then these ladies told that by confessing the sin she has atoned her half of the sin.
They suggested the woman to pray the goddess Ashtami Bhagwati by sketching the face of the cub. By the grace of god your sin will cast off. The woman kept fast on the Kartik Krishna Ashtami and then onwards she started praying and keeping fast regularly. By the power of her prayer the God’s grace showered and she could get back her all seven son. Since then, it became a ritual to worship the goddess Ahoi Ashtami Bhagwati religiously every year.)
